Mont Blanc: first winter ascent

On 31 January 1876, just under 90 years after Balmat and Paccard’s first ascent, a climbing party comprising Isabella Straton, Jean Charlet and Sylvain Couttet made the first winter ascent of Mont Blanc (4,810 m). This was also the first winter ascent by women, a rare occurrence for the time.
